Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatment can promote healing and stimulate the growth of new cells. This makes it suitable for a variety of aesthetic medicine treatments and medical purposes; from combating facial wrinkles and encouraging hair growth, to helping people recover from injuries.

The treatment gained exposure through high-profile athletes, who used PRP to help their injuries heal. Over the years, PRP therapy has grown to become a widely popular treatment with many uses.

What is PRP treatment and how does it work?

PRP consists of platelets, which are a type of blood cell that slow bleeding helps to heal, and plasma, which is the liquid part of the blood. Platelet-rich plasma is blood with a higher concentration of platelets than normal. Platelets help to form blood clots which help with healing, and they are also capable of causing cell reproduction, stimulating tissue regeneration in a targeted area.

Clinicians create PRP by taking your blood sample (usually between 15mm and 50mm) and placing it into a centrifuge. This is a device that quickly spins the sample to separate the platelets from the other blood components (such as erythrocytes (red blood cells) and leukocytes (white blood cells)). Once the PRP is ready, it is collected in a syringe and administered via injection.

PRP treatment benefits

PRP treatment offers a range of benefits for different applications, including:

  • Rejuvenating skin
  • Promoting hair growth
  • Aiding healing of injuries
  • Treating osteoarthritis symptoms

Rejuvenating skin

PRP treatment for the face can help to combat wrinkles and lines on the face by regenerating collagen production. It can also improve the tone and texture of your skin around the eyes, and encourage a healthier-looking complexion.

Promoting hair growth

By treating male pattern baldness (androgenic alopecia), PRP therapy can encourage hair growth and counteract hair loss. PRP is able to prolong the hair cycle’s growth phase and reverse the shrinking of the hair follicles caused by male pattern baldness. Research has concluded that PRP therapy is “a simple, cost-effective and feasible treatment option for androgenic alopecia, with high overall patient satisfaction”.

PRP treatment areas

At PICO Clinics, you’ll benefit from the experience and knowledge of skilled practitioners in aesthetic treatments. We offer two PRP therapy options:

  • PRP treatment for hair loss
  • PRP treatment for aesthetic skin rejuvenation

PRP hair treatment

PRP hair treatment can help to prevent hair loss and encourage hair growth. PRP hair therapy typically requires three sessions, spaced four to six weeks apart. Maintenance treatments can be scheduled periodically.

After a blood sample is taken, it will be placed into a centrifuge, where it will separate into layers of platelet-poor plasma, platelet-rich plasma, and red blood cells. The PRP is then collected into a syringe, before being injected into the areas of the scalp that require hair loss treatment.

There is no recovery time associated with PRP treatment for hair. You’ll be able to wash and condition your hair as normal. If you use chemical treatments on your hair, you should ask your doctor how long you should wait before using them.

PRP treatment for face

PRP therapy for facial skin rejuvenation can trigger cell regeneration. The treatment increases dermal collagen levels, which can help to reduce wrinkles, lines, and folds.

After a blood sample is taken, it will be placed in a centrifuge to isolate the platelet-rich plasma. After the PRP has been extracted it is injected into the skin at the area targeted for treatment. You may be advised to avoid washing your face for a few hours after the procedure.

There is a minimal recovery time after PRP face treatment, and you will be able to go about your daily activities the next day. You may experience redness, a degree of swelling, or minor bruising temporarily following the procedure.

PRP hair treatment before and after

After you’ve undergone a series of PRP treatments for hair loss, you can expect to see changes occur gradually. Hair in areas where there is balding or thinning may appear denser or thicker, and your hairline could start to grow back. You may also notice that you are shedding less hair on a daily basis and that your hair grows quicker.

PRP treatment for face before and after

You can expect to start seeing the effects of PRP therapy for facial skin rejuvenation from around three weeks after the treatment. Gradual changes over the next few months will typically show an improvement in skin tone and texture. While initially, your skin may feel firmer after the treatment, after a month or two, your skin should feel more supple, and your face may appear reinvigorated.

PRP hair treatment reviews

Patients have commented that once their hair began to show signs of regrowth, they felt that their self-confidence increased. Reviewers have noted the visible decrease in hair shedding after having the treatment. Some people expressed their satisfaction with PRP as a natural hair loss treatment option, and others said that PRP treatment for hair exceeded their expectations.

PRP treatment for face reviews

Patients have remarked that their skin felt significantly smoother following PRP treatment. Some reviewers said that they tried PRP therapy after previously undergoing alternative face treatments and that they were happy with the results. People have commented on the lack of discomfort during the procedure, relative to what they had expected. Reviewers have noted that immediately after the treatment – during the hours before they could wash their face – their skin felt tight as the plasma dried.
